2017 Year in Review

Yikes, I am well overdue for a year in review post.

I suppose the reasoning for that is pretty obvious.  As you can tell, my fitness commitment for the last year has been ... lackluster, to say the least.  And being that this is a somewhat fitness oriented blog, it's hard to admit publicly that I"m not working out enough.

Sure, sure - I have a good enough excuse for my lack of fitness with a new child in the house and all, but still!  In the end, an excuse is an excuse, no matter how good it may be.

Disappointment in fitness aside, my life has been filled with a lot of other fun things ... and still a few races despite it all.  So ... let's do this.  Let's recap 2017.

2017, a year in review!

Races

For 2017, all my excuses left me with the smallest race completion list ever on this blog - a whopping 7 races complete in 2017:

Tri-U-Mah, more aptly named "Dumpster Fire"

Bay to Breakers, easily my best race costume to date

Rainbow Run, a tradition 7 years running (literally)

Freedom 5, where I passed the torch ... again ... and again ... and again ...

Lake Run, my first family costumed race

Howl'oween Kids Run, where I spent my day chasing burgers

Terror Trot, the last of my costume recycling in 2017

Total miles raced - about 23ish miles
Cumulative info:
     Races 82 - 88
     Bibs 78 - 83

Costumes

As you can see above, I was somewhat less creative here in 2017.  This is partly due to the fact that I've saturated myself with race costumes over the last few years.  I mean ... once you've run as a pair of stewardesses with a pilot, a mermaid, a statue of liberty (handing out torches, no less), a unicorn, wonder woman, a skeleton, a hamburgler chasing hamburgers, a robot, a mariachi, a rainbow with a pot of gold side kick, a sriracha bottle, a Christmas tree (of sorts), and a woman on fire ...

Well ...

Plus, my budget for InkNBurn clothing, and generally race registrations as a whole ... with an 18 month old in 4T clothing (yes, I said 4T clothing, as in the size of a 4 year old) ... you know where my money is going.  And it ain't on race registrations and workout gear.

Keeping Healthy

Yeah, may as well skip this category in 2017.

Last year, I didn't complete the year of the swim (hence my lack of final recap there), I hardly did any races - and the few I did participate in weren't competitive anyway, and I even let my group fitness participation fall to the wayside.

Rather than focus on the negatives of 2017, what I will say is this: I got sick of being disappointed in myself late last summer, and have therefore started to work towards putting myself back on track.

Right now, I can confidently say I am doing 4 group fitness classes a week (two of which I teach), am committed to starting back on a running program next week, and have signed up for year of the swim attempt #2.

And ... I'm hoping that this re-commitment to fitness will help me in the weight gain area, as I am not happy with where that is a year and a half post baby (almost two years ... in April!)

Changes

Aside from my fitness regime changes (at first in a bad way, and then in a good way), I am also learning to adapt to this "mom" thing.  Or rather, this "extra mom" thing.  Because, you know ... Talk Like a Pirate Day and Halloween are just two of the many reasons through out the year that I can dress mini me in a costume as well.

And honestly, my change in a "bad way" has actually been a good thing for me.  By carrying some extra weight right now, and by being "lazy" and not working out as much, I have had to practice self forgiveness and acceptance - two things that I have never been great at, but have gotten a whole lot better at in 2017.  So chalk one up to personal growth.

In regards to things NOT changing, I'm pleased to be able to say that despite having a child, my family's love for travel has not been lost.  In fact, we were fortunate enough to take two adventurous trips this year: San Francisco in the spring, and a summertime flying trip that carried us in a loop from Escanaba & Mackinac Island / Niagara Falls & Toronto / Dayton, OH / Madison, WI and then back home again.

Finally

In all of my year in review recaps, I take a minute to revisit my previous years of blogging ... and not to pat myself on the back this year, but it's kind of nice to see how I've grown:

2013 was when I was peaking in my physical fitness, my life was finally coming together, and I was feeling great about things.

2014 was a year of struggle where I tried to cope with a miscarriage, some physical setbacks, and I still tried to maintain a healthy attitude and life balance.

2015 and coming into my mid 30's, I finally settled into a happy place in my life.  Some time around 2012 or 2013, I learned to accept things in my life for what they were, and to eliminate things from my life that didn't make me happy.  In that process, I found an authentic me that I've just become ... happy with.  Which means, I don't really go into a year expecting it to be AWESOME or BAD anymore, I just hope that I can continue to maintain that authentic me, and have a good time while I do it.

So aside from becoming a mom in 2016, and growing into that mom role in 2017 ... I just continue to focus on being an authentic me, looking forward to what more adventures are to come!

Tri U Mah 2017 (Dumpster Fire)

Tri U Mah (Timed Triathlon)
Swim, Bike, Run - 30 minutes per leg
Distance Covered, Indoors: 1350 yard swim, 8.6 mile bike, 2.24 mile run

I just have to start this race recap by stating a simple fact: it sucks being a woman.

As if competing in Tri U Mah like this last year wasn't enough of a set back:

This year, I ended up having a super special 1 hour pre race start of "lady time".  Arrrrggghhhh WTF PITA #thissucks #youtrybeingawomanyoustupiddude.

Yes, I said it.  I don't even care that you know when my cycle is!  That's how annoyed I am that I went to Tri U Mah, and literally minutes before I was about to jump in the pool, had a disaster on my hands.

So there I was on race day, with the announcer in the pool area stating the swim will start in 5 minutes, and I'm playing damage control in the locker room.  Good times.  Nothing beats feeling like a 14 year old girl all over again.  Too bad I couldn't just tie a shirt around my waist and call it a day.

I suppose it was only fitting to add the above mess to the guaranteed blow out that Tri U Mah #3 was bound to be for me.  In fact, several days in advance of gun time, my friend and I who do this every year together were jokingly calling this race:

Yeah.  So that pretty much hints at how much training we both put into making this race a success.

God, remember how much fun this race was two years ago?  LOL!  What happened?!  (kidding, kidding)

Man vs. Machine

Oh well.  After some massive locker room damage control and a total lack of organization of my gear due to the need to push/shove into a locker and lock up my crap to rush off to the pool, away I went.

Swim

The one thing that stands out in my mind about Tri U Mah every year is the COLD temps of the pool.  That being said, I can say there was definitely one major win for 2017 - the pool was relatively warm by comparison.  Plus, I simply didn't have the time to build up pre-race anxiety about jumping into a pool where I couldn't touch bottom, so there's another bonus.

With the flurry of disaster that was getting to the start of Tri U Mah, I was a little drained at gun time, and when you look at my watch recap you can see in the first 300 meters my pace showed it:

Yes, I'll talk more about this fancy watch recap stuff in a future post.  Don't worry.  For today, just enjoy the screen shots.

Fortunately, after 300 meters of swimming, I finally settled down into a happy swim pace and did fairly well (by my standards).  In fact, I ended the swim portion at a healthy 1350 meters, which by my quick estimation is in the upper 40-50% or better of the women racing in 2017, so I was pleased with that.  Especially knowing I am NO professional when it comes to swimming.

Of course, I know I could have done better had I pushed just a tad harder ... but what can you do?!

Regardless, 1350 was a 100 meter personal best over the previous two years of competing.  So although I was actually shooting for a 1400-1500 finish, I still netted an 8% total mileage increase over my previous personal best.  I guess the year of the swim is paying off, no?

By the way, I ended my swim actually about 30 seconds early.  I probably could have blasted out another 25 but I figured it wasn't really worth it.  Being that I had pretty much ZERO base training for a 1.5+ hour event, instead I decided to save my energy for the rest of the day.  That is one decision I have no regrets on.

So at 29 minutes and change, I hung out at the starting end of the pool and enjoyed a bit of rest.  Then, as soon as the buzzer sounded, I jumped out of the pool and headed to the locker room.  And for the first time in Tri U Mah history, I actually exercised good time management for my 10 minutes of changing time in T1 - despite just shoving all my gear into a locker pre-race, I still made it up to my bike with about a minute to spare.  Hooray!  No mid race seat adjustments as I pedal for 2017!

Bike

New for 2017, the bikes for Tri U Mah were set up to do some sort of pace + resistance calculation to create your overall distance traveled at the end of 30 minutes.  Unfortunately, that formula was never really clearly explained, so I spent a good amount of time tinkering with my bike's resistance and cadence trying to figure out what this magic formula was.

Well, that and taking some blurry selfies, of course.

Heh.

After testing several bike intervals at various combos of resistance and cadence, I finally came to understand what the computer was telling me.  Of course, I had wasted over 15 minutes of the bike portion at that point.  Drat.  This was a real bummer for me - when I finally realized that the computer weighted your overall MPH with resistance factored in, it was much too late to make up lost miles.

To clarify: I was confused on how they were calculating bike mileage in 2017 because in years past, biking was always a game of high cadence = high final mileage.  Since the race organizers for 2017 only said something to the tune of "this year, resistance will be a part of the equation", I never really knew what role resistance would play and how that would impact final mileage at the end of our ride.

I eventually figured the formula out myself after I noticed the following: when I cranked my resistance down and kicked my cadence WAY up, my MPH would go from 18-20+ DOWN to 14 MPH or less.  Which obviously makes no sense.

Ok - by now you might be shaking your head at me and calling me dumb.  In my defense, I didn't catch the MPH equation above for awhile because my main focus had been on my total miles traveled, not MPH.  It was only after I had completed 15 minutes of my ride and barely cleared 4 or so miles that I said  "WTF?  4 MILES?!  How the heck did I get 20+ miles in years past ... am I REALLY that far out of shape post baby?!"  That's when I realized how resistance weighted MPH.  D'oh.

Knowing what I do now, I wish pre race the organizers would have said something like "This year, the computer will create a weighted MPH that is based on your cadence + resistance per minute.  Keep in mind that a slightly slower cadence + a much higher resistance will actually give you an overall higher MPH output -versus- a faster cadence + a lesser resistance.  Plan your resistance and speed accordingly. "

Oh well.  You're always a pro when you're a Monday morning quarterback, right?  LOL!

Despite my calculation woes and low overall mileage, I was having a relatively good time at the race during the bike.  Of course, it was a drag to realize how out of shape I am post baby (and how tired I was feeling on the bike), but the volunteer staff at the race was a lot of fun this year.  And in particular, there is one guy who recognizes my friend and I because of our wacky InkNBurn outfits each year, so he always comes by to chat up my friend and check out our threads.  Anything to help pass the time, right?  Right!

Speaking of our favorite race day volunteer, how cute is he with this baby?!

Anyway!  In other positive news, it seemed like there was much better ventilation in the bike area for 2017.  That could be because I got lucky and was right in the line of a fan.  Or that could also be because I didn't have 30+ lbs of baby belly warming me up as I pedaled away, too.  Who knows.  Either way, a drop in temperature for 2017 was greatly appreciated.

Temperature aside, soon enough, our 30 minutes of biking was over.

While I wasn't exactly pleased with my 8.6 mile end result, my friend reminded me "YOU JUST HAD A BABY.  Give yourself a break."

OK, ok.  Yeah I know.  (Though I only really felt better re: this point once they published 2017 results, that's when I saw very few competitors even cleared the 10 mile mark, so obviously the cadence + resistance calculation slowed everyone down compared to years past.)

---

Run

As per every year, we had a 5 minute transition from the bike to the run.  I used this time to change out of my bike cleats and put on my new pair of running shoes ... which, *ahem*, I purchased over a month ago with the intention to begin my 2017 run training, and promptly never did.

Yeah, yeah.  30 lashes with a wet noodle.

For 2017, I don't have much to say about the run portion.  Overall, my friend and I were slap happy at this point, so we were gleefully singing along to the PA system as they played Spice Girls.

The volunteers seemed equally slappy, being that the final heat of the day was on the bikes in front of us (which we could see through the windows that divided the treadmills from the bikes).  So as my friend and I jazz hands danced and yelled "spice up your life", the volunteers by the bike area cabbage patched back to us, did a few cartwheels, and even did a little team coordinated jig of sorts.

Hey - if you can't act like an idiot to help pass the time, what else are you going to do?!  (I'm pretty sure the guy on the treadmill to my left during the race just said "um, STFU, that's what you're going to do".  He didn't seem to appreciate our antics much.  Heh.)

Obviously, by the time we were running, we were SUPER SERIOUS about our performance at this race and were totally focused on KILLING IT on the treadmill.  I mean, what super elite runner doesn't track to a 13 minute mile?  LOL!

Who cares, when the final countdown completed, at least I could walk away from the race and say "I had a good time".

Footnote - obviously my watch needs a little treadmill running calibration.  But I do appreciate it padding me up to 2.52 miles instead of 2.24.  LOL!

---

After we finished our heat, I headed to the refreshments table (which I have to admit was in sad form for 2017 - it's obvious that they were not keeping that area well kept for the late heats), and my friend decided to test out the BodPod machine that was on display.

Speaking of BodPod, I had seen this thing at the race in years past but never knew it was free for race day competitors to test out.  Damnit!

Not wanting to know my body fat percentage post baby, I declined to get a scan this year.  But next year ... for sure!

Once the results were in for my friend's scan, we wrapped up our day with a victory photo:

And then, since by the above calculations I burned approximately 1 million calories (ok, ok - technically only about 1300 calories or less), after a quick shower we headed to our traditional post race meal at the Caspian ... where I promptly displayed my race day T.

(Photo of swag to be added later)

And that is the story of my first official race of 2017.  Here's to another race soon!!

It's been a while since I've done a recap of all the races I've ever ran.  And since I did a MASSIVE Goodwill donation run just before having my baby (I'm not kidding, I donated over 50 shirts, most of which were race related) ... I know the number is getting pretty big.

So, there you have it.  So far I have participated in 81 races (which means I have a real chance of clearing 100 races by the end of 2017), and I own 77 bibs.  If you want to consider the entire distances ... that would be:

   One 4K
Fifty-five 5Ks (two with a stroller in tow)
   Three 7Ks
   One 8K
   One 5 miler
   Four 10Ks
   One 10 miler
   Five Half Marathons
Three Half Marathon Relays (at about 6 miles each)
One Partial Marathon (course was closed at mile 16-17ish)
   One Duathalon (4 miles ran)
Two Duathlon relays (2x5K at each race)
Three Triathlons (about 8 miles ran total)
One Triathlon relay (about 8 miles ran)

Or, roughly 360 miles of racing on foot (this number is not including any swim or bike distances).  And let's not even talk about the training I did working up to that.  Phew!!

So, close to seven years of running.  Wow.  I guess ... that's what it gets you!!  All the above, and a real sense of self accomplishment, too.

The Year of the Swim

As I mentioned in my Tuesday post, towards the end of last year I "retired" from my old gym and teaching group fitness.  As a result, that left me searching for a new place to get fit.

Funny enough, at the same time that I left, a few other people I knew from my old gym also shopped around.  Unbeknownst to me, some of them joined the same new place I did.

So of course, now I have to goad people to join me in the antics of this new place, too ...

Queue the 100-Mile Swim Challenge taunting on Facebook:

I've never been a huge swimmer.  In fact, with 52 weeks in a year and an end goal of 100 miles, I'd have to pretty much double my current swim routine in order to finish.  But since I don't have any real training goals for 2017 and I like new challenges, I thought this would be worth a shot.

Plus, I have an indoor tri coming up end of February, so if nothing else this should help me rock the swim segment.

Not to mention, swimming is easy to get in over my lunch break at work.  So it's a natural fit into whatever my "mom fitness" routine evolves into.

So, that all being said ... let the trash talking begin.

Oh ... and anyone have any tips for me on swim friendly ear buds or lap counters?  I'm terrible at keeping track of my laps in my head.  Suggestions welcome below.

2016 Year in Review

Well folks, it's January 31st.  The month is almost done, and here I am finally getting around to what is typically my first post of the year, in the first week of the year.  #winningattimemanagement

Whatever ... so is the life of a busy new mom, I guess.

Since I'm already late with this post, let's just get started, shall we?!

2016, a year in review!

Races

As you well know, something kind of slowed down my race schedule for 2016.

Yes, that's me, literally the night before I delivered.  I was having contractions every 3-5 minutes in that picture, can you tell?  LOL!  To be fair, I didn't know at the time that I was so near to delivery, since contractions didn't become painful until almost 24 hours later (or just roughly 3 hours before I had a baby in my arms).  So that may just be why I look so footloose and fancy free in that pic!

Baby talk aside, my race participation for 2016 was a record low with a measly 10 races.

Feb - Tri-U-Mah, Indoor timed tri, no bib provided
June - Rainbow Run 5K
July - Freedom Five 5K, Froyo 5K, Gandy Dancer Fly In 5K
August - Webster Education 5K w/stroller
September - Lake Run 5K w/ stroller, Waconia Nickle Dickle 5K, Women Run the Cities 10K
October - Carreras de los Muertos 5K

Total miles raced - about 35ish miles
**Worth noting, the majority of these were done when I was 6 months or less post-partum, thank you very much.  You could also sort of add in the Volksmarch for 10K here, too, though it wasn't a race.

Cumulative info:
     Races 72 - 81
     Bibs 69 - 77

Costumes

Let's face it, there's no way in hell you can put a costume on this and still actually race:

That being said, life in costume was a little easier once the baby was out!  LOL!  Though I was still hesitant to wear a lot of my "good" stuff and risk stretching it out since I am still fighting off my baby weight.  Hence the somewhat smaller collection of pictures this year:

And of course, being an InkNBurn Ambassador helped in that category just a bit, too.

Keeping Healthy

As you know, gestational diabetes was a really PITA for me in 2016.  Despite being active my entire pregnancy, and trying REALLY hard to not gain too much weight, I just didn't win in avoiding my family's curse (yes, others in my blood line also suffered this fate).

Luckily, after having the baby, my blood sugars normalized and I'm no longer diabetic.  But regardless of that news, I do know that having gestational diabetes means I'm at an elevated risk of becoming type 2 in the future.

That being said, moving into 2017 my focus will be to lose the body fat I gained in, or prior to, my pregnancy (because although technically I weigh less now than I did when I first got pregnant, my clothes don't fit right, so I can tell I'm carrying much more fat than muscle right now).

Of course my weight loss and toning goals for 2017 are within reason - I'm still breastfeeding, which throws a real wrench into diet & exercise programs, as aggressive plans can hinder milk supply.  Therefore, this goal is really more long term and will likely see most progress mid to late 2017.

Changes

2016 was a rough year in terms of changes.  Before I could even celebrate bringing a new life into the world, I had to say goodbye to my 16 year old beagle.  And while his heath was failing, I was in the mist of trying to prepare for my first child, so it was really a tough balance ... which was made even harder as I had to manage a lot of it alone, since my husband was out of the country for weeks at a time, doing business in London.

In addition to that, at the end of 2016 I made a major change that's been a little depressing for me, hence why I haven't shared it publically until now.  In October, I put in my notice as a group fitness instructor.  A lot of things in life were changing at that time, both for me and at the gym where I worked, and it just didn't make sense for me to keep working there anymore.  I miss teaching - a lot ... like, really A LOT - but I try not to let it get me down.  Hopefully I'll be back in action and teaching again some day soon.

Finally

In my 2015 recap, I took a minute to revisit my last few years of blogging / years in review as follows:

2013 was when I was peaking in my physical fitness, my life was finally coming together, and I was feeling great about things.

2014 was a year of struggle where I tried to cope with a miscarriage, some physical setbacks, and I still tried to maintain a healthy attitude and life balance.

2015?  I can't really say 2015 was an AMAZING year.  But I wouldn't rate it as bad, either.  I say this because I think coming into my mid 30's (yikes, that makes me feel old, lol!), I finally settled into a happy place in my life.  Some time around 2012 or 2013, I learned to accept things in my life for what they were, and to eliminate things from my life that didn't make me happy.  And somewhere in that process, I found an authentic me that I've just become ... happy with.  Which means, I don't really go into a year expecting it to be AWESOME or BAD anymore, I just hope that I can continue to maintain that authentic me.  And have a good time while I do it.  And in 2015, I did just that.  So I think that's just fine.

So that leaves me with 2016.  Which I have to say was just what I expected - authentic me, new baby in arms, and more adventures to come!

Tri U Mah 2016 (Mah Tri'd)

Tri U Mah (Timed Triathlon)
Swim, Bike, Run - 30 minutes per leg
Distance Covered, Indoors: 1050 yard swim, 12.2 mile bike, 1.63 mile "run"

So remember this last year?

For those of you who don't - that's the first ever Man vs. Machine triathlon known to Tri U Mah.  Or possibly the world.  Who knows?

Anyway, after having a blast last year, we decided to race Tri U Mah again in 2016.  I mean ... who's going to let a pregnancy slow them down?

Or an ER visit for that matter?

So on that note, in what you can see is optimal race condition for me physically, the Saturday following my ER admission I meandered on down to the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center to throw down for my first official race of 2016.

---

Swim

Despite being extra buoyant these days, with an added floatation device in my belly, I was dreading the swim portion of this race.  Mostly because I was worried about the physical ease of getting in and out of the pool, which is getting increasingly more difficult with this baby on board.

Thankfully, the staff on event day was extremely accommodating of me upon seeing my giant belly, and worked hard on relocating me to an open lane that was adjacent to a pool ladder.

Thank god, as this meant I could simply lower myself into the pool before race start.

Well, that and freeze my little man's balls off (no point in talking about my condition, since those froze off years ago).  Seriously, though - that pool felt cold!

The good news was, finding a lane with ladder access took a considerable amount of time, so I didn't end up hanging on the side of the pool in the cold water for long.  Our heat was scheduled to start at 4:25, and the last thing I recall was looking at the clock at 4:23.

Then the announcer started counting down 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... BUZZ!

And I was off.

Like all races, I started out on this one too fast.  And like on all race swims, I started out in a mild panic.  For some reason, I swam my first 2-3 laps taking a breath on every other pull.  Eventually I found myself gasping for air and feeling like I needed to burp.  Not really a great combination for someone who's pregnant, in 7' deep water, and already struggling to breathe on a regular "just walking around" basis.

I'm not proud to admit that during the first 10 minutes of the swim, I had to take several breaks on the edge of the pool to catch my breath and have coughing fits (yes, I was still working off the cold that put me in the ER 6 days ago, too).

Realizing things were NOT going well, I eventually had to give myself a firm talking to as I completed my next few laps.  "CALM THE F DOWN!  YOU DID THIS LAST YEAR JUST FINE.  DO NOT TAKE A BREATH EVERY 2 PULLS.  COUNT OUT 4 LIKE YOU NORMALLY DO!!"

Eventually, I started to calm down and settle in to a normal pace.  But unfortunately the damage was done.  Despite having high hopes of beating my distance from last year of 1250, I finished the swim at 1050.  Oh well, I did the best I could.  And considering this year I'm 20+ pounds heavier, over 7 months pregnant, and am working off the remnants of a serious cold ... well, ok.  I'll take it!

Straddling the lane rope, since it was hooked right in the center of the ladder to escape (of course), I started working my way out of the pool.  Tired from the swim, my arms were a little weak, and I had a fleeting moment where I thought I might star in "Ow, My Balls!  Season 3".

Thank goodness, though, I managed to keep my grip and get out of the pool without incident.

Once out of the pool, I had 10 minutes for the transition from swim to bike - just like last year.  And somehow just like last year, despite wearing my sports bra in the swim to help save on that struggle (last year did not go well - hey, I'm learning, give me credit for that!), that time seemed to fly by.

Bike

So yes - again this year I ended up tearing over to my bike just as the 30 second count down to begin was in process.

Unfortunately, the big let down for me this year in being so late was ... the staff was not nearly as accommodating and friendly on the bike as they were last year.  Last year, I was literally pedaling standing as the woman assisting me was adjusting my seat.  This year ... crickets.

People were well into their bike, like 1-2 minutes in, and I was screaming for someone on staff to come help me .  It was incredibly frustrating.  As you can see in the photos above, there were 9-10 staffers milling around the bikes, so there was really no reason for the lack of assistance.  Yet not a single person offered to come to my aid as I struggled to lower my bike seat.  Lame.

To make matters worse, the woman next to me on the bike was an absolute BEAR.  She spent the first 5 minutes of the bike berating the staff because - in her estimation - we did not get 10 minutes in transition.  Which I have to say ... uh, yeah, we did.  Because I milked every last one of them.

PLUS!  This woman.  OMG!  She threw her gear bag and wet transition towel down LITERALLY right under my left pedal.  Like - right in the way of my pedal stroke.  Plus, it was on top of my little drop bag (which I ONLY brought with me because of my gestational diabetes issues and being afraid to go without my blood meter and emergency sugar low candy during an hour and a half fitness event).

So, yeah.  Her stinky, sweaty, wet towel was getting my medical device gross.  I was not impressed, and I'm not ashamed to say I kicked her crap out of my way before I started pedaling.  Which I still don't think she took a hint to.

But anyway.

Aside from the issues I had with adjusting my seat, and my crappy neighbor, about 10 minutes in I noticed my right leg/foot was cramping and I realized why.  Whoever was on my bike before me hadn't loosened the toe cages properly, so my foot was only sliding into the pedal about two thirds of the way in - on both sides!  I was again frustrated with the lack of staff involvement.  With the breaks they had in between waves of riders, there really should have been no reason for them not to loosen all the toe cages for the next group of riders.

Needless to say, at this point I was SUPER missing my clip in bike cleats.  I didn't wear them this year because I had decided to sacrifice them for convenience - after all, changing shoes with a basketball on my gut isn't exactly easy.  So for 2016, I opted to just wear one pair of shoes for the bike and run to save myself the struggle of changing shoes. But in the end, I'm not sure that sacrifice was worth it.

Wanting to put all the negativity that seemed to be piling up around me aside, I decided to switch off my brain and just focus on my bike cadence instead.  My goal was to keep around a 90-100rpm, and by tuning out everything except the music that was blasting over the audio system ... I did just that.  For the most part, anyway ... except for any moments the baby was stretching in my belly and telling me I needed to sit up straighter.  LOL!

Somehow, when all was said and done, I looked down at my mileage calculator and I had gone much further than the 10 miles I had anticipated.  Score!  It's amazing what you can do when you really set your mind to it.

Time to disembark the bike and head to the treadmills.

Run

Again like last year, we had a 5 minute transition from the bike to the run.  Since I had nothing I really needed to do this year, like change out of my bike cleats, I found myself wondering how to pass the time.

Well, to be fair, I did kind of need to pee.  Imagine that - a pregnant woman needing to pee - but I knew there was too much competition for the one bathroom stall available, and that I could manage to wait, so I skipped it.

Just when I thought to myself "gee, how will I pass the time", I was saved - once again, by my crab ass neighbor.

Oh yes, the bear returned.  And she was bitching once again about the lack of time in transition.  Because she "has been doing this race since 2008, and there has always been 10 minutes between the bike and the run, and this is bullshit!!!"  *direct quote

Seriously?  Um ... did you check the website before you registered this year?

* Actual screen grab from the registration page.

Having no patience left, I looked at her and said "You know, I did this race last year, and I only had 5 minutes from the bike to the run.  And what the hell would you do with 10 minutes here anyway?  Aside from the fact that I might like a chance to pee, I don't see the reason for it."

Not wanting to be wrong, the woman kept arguing and mumbling, and I finally just said to her "Well, we're here now so whatever."  And from then out I just tuned her out.  I just couldn't understand why you would be so upset over an event that is supposed to be fun.

And not to be catty but ... why did it even matter to her?  When the time came to start running, she walked right next to me on her treadmill.  So it's not like she was some elite racer that was about to clean out her age category or anything!

I digress.

Not wanting to be a part of that negativity anymore, I turned my attention down the run lane towards my friend the skeleton ... who was getting much love from the staff for her InkNBurn outfit.  Turns out they remembered us from last year, asking her if she was the one in the muscle suit.  LOL!  Awesome!

I lamented to them that I couldn't fit my InkNBurn anymore, pointing at my belly, and we all had a good laugh.  Even the girl in between us on that side was impressed that I was 7 1/2 months pregnant and still competing.  The good energy and fun times abounded.

Even though my face might not have showed it.

Since I gave up running at the end of race season in 2015, and this was the longest workout I had done in ages, by the time we were 15 minutes into the treadmill portion I was starting to get pretty pooped.  Thankfully, the time passed relatively quickly, and not long after we started ... we were done.

BOOM!  Another race in the books.

Thanks for coming along with me, Mini-Cobb!

Immediately following our run, my partner and I dashed over to the food table to refuel.  With my dietary restrictions, I could basically have like 1/8 of a bagel with cream cheese before going out to dinner, but let me tell you - I savored every bite.

Once we had some fuel in our bellies, it was time for a few post race victory photos:

And then we headed to the locker room for our post race victory showers - which were quick because, let's face it, a pregnant lady's gots to eat!

Oh, and thank goodness for nice race swag, because I had to wear my shirt to dinner.  Good thing I thought ahead and registered for a size larger than my normal.

(Photo of swag to be added later - my pregnant brain keeps forgetting to take a snap of it)
Yes it's July 2016 and I'm finally adding the photo.  Deal with it.

And that is the story of Mini-Cobb's first ever tri.  Since he's already hung in there for several 5Ks, a 10K and even a 10 miler, I figured he'd be down for one last race before his birthday ... and I think I figured right!

Here's to another race soon!!

Pregnant Tri

For those of you wondering ... this weekend, I did in fact compete!  Here's a sneak peek of the recap, which will be posted in full on Thursday:
